On August 11, Settlement Housing Fund and New Settlement Apartments hosted a groundbreaking for the New Settlement Community Campus on Jerome Avenue in the Mount Eden neighborhood of the Bronx. Community members were joined by friends and supporters at the construction site of the future Campus, a pre-K through 12th grade public school and private nonprofit community center with swimming pool, art and dance studios, amphitheater and green roof terrace. The Campus will offer a unique model, as the school and community center facilities will be shared by the students and members of the community. This 176,000 sq. ft. Campus will cost $83.3 million and Settlement Housing Fund must raise approximately $14 million for the community center and pool. Construction will be complete so the school can open in 2012.
Speaking at the event were: Richard Ravitch, New York State Lieutenant Governor; Dennis Walcott, New York City Deputy Mayor for Education and Community Development; Aurelia Greene, Bronx Deputy Borough President; Maria Baez, Bronx Coucilmember; Vanessa Gibson, New York State Assemblywoman; Sharon Greenberger, President and CEO, NYC School Construction Authority; Dominic Carter, NY1 News Host/Senior Political Reporter; Jack Doyle, New Settlement Apartments Executive Director; and Carol Lamberg, Settlement Housing Fund Executive Director. It was hailed as a great day for the Bronx, where this facility will bring further revitalization and significant education, recreation and arts resources to the community.
